Andrés Felipe Candamil

Colombian clarinetist Andrés Felipe Candamil, a native of Villamaría, Caldas, began his musical training within Colombia’s renowned wind band system. He studied at the University of Caldas and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Clarinet Performance with an emphasis in Instrumental Pedagogy from the National University of Colombia in 2006. His artistic development was shaped by distinguished teachers Hernán D. Gutiérrez, Robert D’Gennaro, and Héctor Pinzón, whose mentorship played a defining role in his growth as a performer.

From an early age, he established himself as an orchestral musician, performing with some of Colombia’s leading ensembles, including the Cundinamarca Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cundinamarca Symphonic Band, and the Colombian Youth Symphony Orchestra, with which he appeared as a soloist on several occasions.

His international career gained momentum after being selected to represent Colombia at the 6th and 7th Latin American Clarinet Festivals in Caracas, Venezuela, where he participated in masterclasses with internationally renowned clarinetists.

In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Lunes de los Jóvenes Intérpretes (Young Performers Mondays) Prize by the Luis Ángel Arango Library in Bogotá, an honor that led to a solo recital in one of Colombia’s most distinguished concert halls.

Since relocating to South Florida in 2007, Andrés Candamil has built an accomplished career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral clarinetist. He has performed with numerous symphony orchestras, opera companies, and chamber ensembles, including the Hollywood Philharmonic, South Beach Chamber Ensemble, FIU Wind Ensemble, South Florida Symphony, Florida Grand Opera, Treasure Coast Opera Society, Sociedad Pro-Arte Gratelli, Sinfonietta Society Orchestra, Palm Beach Symphony, and the Saul Vera Ensemble, establishing himself as an active and versatile presence within South Florida’s vibrant musical community.

In 2013, he participated in the live PBS concert recording at the Fillmore Miami Beach with the internationally acclaimed vocal group Il Volo, an experience that expanded his involvement in large-scale audiovisual productions. As a member of the Miami Symphony Orchestra, he has also participated in recording soundtracks for Netflix productions, including La Reina del Sur 2 (2018) and La Reina del Sur 3 (2021).

Alongside his performing career, he remains deeply committed to music education and community engagement. In 2025, he was nominated for the El Sistema USA Teacher of the Year Award, recognizing excellence in teaching and leadership among educators dedicated to creating social impact and fostering the musical development of children and young people through orchestral education.

He is a founding member of Miami Clarinet Day, together with renowned clarinetist Julián Santacoloma, an annual initiative that provides free masterclasses and clinics for underserved students in the Miami-Dade County public school system. He is also a founding member of the Miami International Clarinet Quartet and is a sponsored artist for Jean Paul USA.

Since 2011, he has served as Principal Clarinetist of the Miami Symphony Orchestra. He currently serves as Music Director at Loyola School in Miami Springs and as a Teaching Artist with Miami Music Project, combining an active performing career with a strong commitment to educating and inspiring the next generation of musicians.
