Maribel Alonso
Originally from Mexicali, Baja California, she completed her professional studies at the Conservatorio de las Rosas (Morelia), the Escuela Superior de Música (Mexico City), and the University of Music and Performing Arts (Vienna).
She has performed as a soloist, as well as with various ensembles and orchestras throughout Mexico, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. Her improvisational skills and musical creativity have earned her numerous grants and artistic residencies, including the OMI Music Residency, Carnegie Hall Academy, Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, Domaine Forget Summer Course, Festival Cervantino, Resiliencia Sonora Música UNAM, among others.
Her current discography includes Sandbox, a series of improvisations for bassoon and electric bass recorded alongside Dutch bassist Jochem van Dijk, and Tsunami Sonoro by Colectiva TSUNAMI, a network of Mexican women musicians who prioritize the promotion and performance of works by Latin American women composers, as well as their own collectively created compositions. Since 2018, she has served as Professor of Bassoon at the Escuela Superior de Música INBAL and the Faculty of Music at UNAM, and she is the Artistic Director of the FAM-UNAM Bassoon Festival and Resonante Festival of Contemporary Music and Sound Experimentation.
