Hu Chen yun
Hu Chenyun is a renowned suona player with the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra. He is a First-Class National Artist of China and has been named a Leading Talent of Shanghai. He also serves as a judge for the China National Arts Fund. Hu is a member of the board of directors of the Shanghai Musicians’ Association and of the Suona Specialized Committee of the China Musicians’ Association. In recognition of her lifetime achievements, the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission established the “Hu Chenyun Folk Music Studio” in her honor, with the aim of promoting Chinese music among students.
Hu is a master of the suona and other wind instruments, and he demonstrates precise control and a refined interpretation of both traditional and contemporary repertoire. His performance of *The Birds Pay Homage to the Phoenix* earned him the Gold Prize at the 14th International Wind Instrument Arts Festival in the Netherlands. He has been invited to perform in more than 40 countries and regions around the world and has collaborated with leading orchestras such as the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Russian National Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra.
Has performed at prestigious venues, including the National Centre for the Performing Arts in China, the Shanghai Grand Theatre, the Shanghai Concert Hall, the Barbican Centre in London, the KKL in Lucerne (Switzerland), the Philharmonie in Paris, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Berliner Philharmonie, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, and the Concert Hall of the St. Petersburg State Chapel, among many others.
In recent years, Hu has consistently dedicated himself to exploring innovative approaches to the performance and presentation of the suona, guided by an artistic vision focused on keeping pace with the times and fostering creative development. Has premiered numerous new works, including concertos for the suona commissioned especially for him, and has given many solo recitals on various themes throughout the country.
