Luis Casal
Dr. Luis Casal is a Panamanian violinist and violist whose artistic leadership has distinguished him as one of his country’s foremost classical musicians. Recognized in 2015 as a “Remarkable Citizen of Panama” by the National Commission Pro Civic Values and Morals, he was praised by The Panama News as being “right at the top” of Panama’s classical music scene.
An active international performer and pedagogue, Dr. Casal’s engagements as a recitalist, chamber musician, and guest clinician have taken him across Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Americas. His performance highlights include appearances at distinguished venues such as Carnegie Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A dedicated chamber musician, Dr. Casal performs as the violinist for the Ensemblast quartet, a project founded by his brother, cellist Isaac Casal, whose newest recording was recently considered for a Grammy nomination. He also serves as the violist for the Majcherczyk & Casal Duo with his wife, violinist Anna Majcherczyk. The duo was recently featured on the 2025 American Viola Society (AVS) recording, performing the first movement of Dr. Casal’s own original duo for violin and viola.
A distinguished orchestral leader, Dr. Casal has served as Principal Violist of the National Symphony of Panama and the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra. He currently serves as Concertmaster of the ADCA Symphony Orchestra and the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra, and as Principal Violist with the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra.
Dr. Casal joins the viola faculty at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp for the 2026 summer season. Throughout the academic year, he holds faculty positions at The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, and the Lucy Moses School at the Kaufman Music Center. A committed composer and advocate for contemporary music, his 8 Etudes for Violin was commissioned by The Juilliard School in 2021.
He serves as Vice President of the Sinfonía Concertante Foundation of Panama and the Alfredo De Saint Malo Music Festival, where he also acts as Honorary Academic Adviser.
