Omar Guevara began his musical studies at the Oaxacan Cultural Institute
and the Oaxaca Conservatory of Music. His early violin influences were under the tutelage of Alejandro Urbieta. Later (1998) he attended the Texas Music Festival were he studied with William Pu and Fredell Lack. On his return to Mexico City he was admitted to the Ollin Yolitzli School for Music Perfection in the violin class of Sergei Gorbenko where he graduated with an Honorable Mention. Among variouscompetitions outstanding was taking First Place at the Sixth National Violin Competition ‘Hermilo Novelo’, held at the National Autonomous University School of Music (UNAM). Following his interests in chamber music he founded the Nauhyotzin String Quartet. The quartet fine-tuned their skills coached by renowned string quartets such as: the Ying, Shanghai, Amernet, St. Petersburg, Latin American and Skampa, Melos and Tokyo. In 2000, the Nauhyotzin String
Quartet went on to successfully tour important concert halls in the capital cities of France, Italy and Switzerland. They were winners of the First National String Quartet Competition in Morelia, Michoacán in addition to obtaining the Second Prize in the Third National
Chamber Music Competition in Salamanca, Guanajuato. His career in orchestras was decisively influenced when he was selected to participate in the Pacific Music Festival (PMF) held in the city of Sapporo Japan. It was here that Omar had the opportunity to work with the leading musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the first desk players of the PMF, as well as with celebrated composers John Corigliano, Krzysztof Penderecki and Ichiyanagi Toshi. With the PMF Orchestra he performed under the baton of Seiko Kim, Wen-Pin Chien, Luis Biava, Fabio Luisi, Yutaka Sado, Edo de Waart, Charles
Dutoit, Bernard Haitink and Valery Gergiev, in the major concert halls of Sapporo, Kyoto, Osaka, Yokohama and Tokyo. In his native Mexico, Omar has held the posts of concertmaster of the Carlos Chavez Symphony Orchestra, second concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, and concertmaster of the University of Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra. He is currently violinist with the Cuarteto Carlos Chavez and holds the post of co-principal violin with the Mexico National Symphony Orchestra.
